Collection of microalgae strains and initial and intermediate production of Nannochloropsis oculata (Eustigmatophyceae) under controlled laboratory conditions. Microalgae, as primary producers of the marine trophic pyramid, make up the first link of the food chain in the aquatic environment. In aquaculture, they are the basis of the whole production of marine fish larvae food such as rotifera, copepods and artemias. Within the “Experimental Mariculture and Biology” Program, at the Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Pesquero (INIDEP), the culture technology of red porgy (Pagrus pagrus) and flounder (Paralichthys orbignyanus) that requires production of microalgae to obtain larvae and juveniles of both species is being developed. The first step... |

The growth and the size-frequency distribution of six unicellular marine algae, Isochrysis aff. galbana "Tahiti" nom. prov., Pavlova lutheri (Droop) Green, Pseudoisochrysis paradoxa nom. prov., Tetraselmis tetrathele (G.S. West) Butcher, Chaetoceros calcitrans (Paulsen) Takano et Chaetoceros gracilis Schutt have been studied. Most of these species showed an increase in size during the stationary phase of growth. Because these data and anterior ones were achieved in similar experimental conditions, they were ranked by size and their growth performances discussed. |

The research has shown that interspecific and intergeneric hybridization is possible in the Laminariales with variable rates according to the species used; these rates were determined precisely only following preliminary study where the rate of parthenogenetic development was evaluated for each particular species. Besides, the results obtained concerning the ecophysiology of the Laminariales and especially the effect of temperature and light on the fertility of the gametophytes, prompt to undertake experimental cultures of the hybrids in order to obtain algae with qualities superior to those of the parents, particularly regarding alginic acid content and growth. The experiments carried out in 1983 concern together the rearing ashore of isolated... |

The feasibility of large-scale bloom induction of nutritionally suited natural phytoplankton species, to feed a semi-industrial nursery of edible shellfish, built on the Belgian coast, was tested. The outdoor microalgal production unit consisted of four tanks of 100 m² surface each (two of 1 m depth and two of 0.5 m depth), equipped with different mixing devices. The cultures were run as chemostats in which seawater was enriched with commercial inorganic N, P and Si fertilizers. Depending on the season, between 5-10 and 80% of the culture volume could be harvested daily, with algal densities ranging from 50,000 to 500,000 cells per ml. By manipulation of operational parameters such as detention time, nutrient levels and nutrient ratios (N: Si: P), unsuited... |

High densities of brine shrimp Artemia can be cultured in flow-through systems using the effluent of microalgae cultures as a combined source of culture medium and food. It has been proven at the "St. Croix Artificial Upwelling Mariculture Project" that in comparison with the fast growing clam Tapes japonica, brine shrimp assure a much more efficient conversion of plant into animal biomass. It appears from the given examples that microalgae conversion into brine shrimp Artemia offers efficient and economic applications. |
